Ant plan needs support Kate Russell

Two Nelson residents believe they may have come up with a cost-effective and long-term solution for controlling Argentine ants in the region, using bait made from just sugar, water and borax. But, they say it will only work if the whole community gets behind their idea. Dr Kay Sneddon and Andrew Goldsworthy have teamed up to develop the bait, which is based on a similar project carried out in California where Argentine ants are regarded as the number one pest. They say the key to the bait’s effectiveness is using a low concentration of borax, a household product, which is a natural salt and has a low level of toxicity. It is not poisonous to animals or hu-

mans in low concentrations as long as precautions are taken. “Borax has been used to combat ants for ages - it’s not new, but what is new is the concentration,” says Kay. “People used to use it in very high concentrations, but it would kill the working ants straight away so wouldn’t have a chance to bring the bait back to kill the queens, which is what we need to do. But this low dose bait will allow the worker ants to return to the nest with the bait and get it into the colonies.” Andrew says the reason Argentine ants have established themselves so strongly in Richmond and Nelson is because they have multiple queens and form ‘supercolonies.’ And it’s a problem which

Huge crowd for wine and food festival Wine and music were flowing as over 4000 locals filed into Sunday’s Brightwater Wine & Food Festival, armed with umbrellas, picnic blankets and an endless sea of sunscreen. Middle-Earth Vineyard played host to the annual festival once more and was joined by the Mussel Inn, Waimea Estate, Millcrest Wines, Dale’s Brewing and other local vineyards, breweries and food stalls. Brightwater's Marian Goodman lives only a stone’s throw from the event. “This is our fourth year com-

ing, it’s such a cool community event and I only have to walk across the road.” Organiser Kevin Gear says Sunday’s festival was a dream. “It was a great day with no trouble, the weather was fantastic, the venue looked superb and everyone was just enjoying the music, food, wine and beer.” Kevin says the big winner was the camper vans, “We had around 50 turn up from all around New Zealand and they had a great time.”

For the first time, the festival opened its gates to motorhomes, offering a free stay amongst the vineyards. Noel and Barb Bain, who travelled up from Oamaru with Raewyn and Terry Thorpe, made the most of the festival’s new addition. “It was a good stay last night, everyone had a good time and it was very sociable,” says Terry. The group had never been to the festival before but said they were having a great time and recommended the Middle-Earth wines.

Nelsonians risk “turning a blind eye to.” They both say the ants are very concentrated in parts of Nelson, especially The Wood and Panorama Drive, but are widely found in the region and can be spread in potting mix. Some believe that they could even get into the beech forests, where they could potentially cause an even greater risk. “I think we’ve only just woken up to the fact that they’ve landed,” Andrew says. “As the Council's handout warns us, they have the potential to eradicate every other type of ant, earthworms, invertebrates and nestlings. They could get into orchards and vineyards, and if they’re hungry enough, they’ve even been known to damage the irrigation.” Andrew says the first step is to get

strategically as possible around the infested areas.” They are hoping to organise an ‘ant month’ in the springtime when they will hold ‘mixing parties’ to get whole streets on board and encour-

age the community to put bait jars down simultaneously. “It only takes one or two households to resist and you don’t get rid of the infestation, it just stays there and will spread out again. The ants can advance 160 metres a year.” Andrew says they are currently trialling versions of the bait locally, and they hope to hold a meeting in Tahunanui soon to see if there is support for a strategy to tackle the problem in a new and more effective way. “You have to think of it as a war, not a battle,” says Andrew. “The ants only landed here in 2001 and have been on the march since, but we have the opportunity to try to knock them back. Heavy rain destroys part of Brook fence Kate Russell A slip triggered by heavy rain in Nelson last week has caused significant damage to the Brook Sanctuary’s pest-proof fence. A significant 65 metres of the fence line, which was only completed six months ago, will need to be repaired, after a slip came down Fringed Hill above the pest proof fence track and the Dun Mountain Trail. Brook Waimarama Sanctuary general manager Hudson Dodd says the entire perimeter of the fence was checked on Friday and they are now having the damage and repairs to the fence assessed. “Once this process has been completed we will know what the programme of remedial works will look like,” he says. “Of course, we want the repairs to be done as soon as possible, but we won’t have a time-frame for this until the assessment is finished, which may take some time due to the complexity of the situation.” Well-known Nelson mountainbiking advocate Bryce Buckland says it’s “not surprising” that the fence has been

He has been against the building of the pest-proof fence right from the start, and voiced his concerns after a 22 metre section of the Dun Mountain Trail slipped onto the fence line cut following heavy rain last March. “Why they put the fence in before clearing the remainder of the slip above it that was triggered by their fence cut is beyond me,” says Bryce. “Now they are probably going to have to cut into the hillside again to fix the fence which will trigger another slip. “When we get a significant rain and wind storm event, then we will see real carnage up there.

They are fiddling with nature and they, and ratepayers, will pay the penalty.” But Hudson says both the Trust and Nelson City Council were aware of the risk of slips on Fringed Hill. “All prudent steps have been taken to minimise and mitigate that risk,” he says. “The great community benefits of the project outweigh the risk of slips to the pest-proof fence. While it’s disappointing to see it damaged, contractors are working on an assessment for repairs.” Nelson City Council’s communication manager Paul Shattock says that engineers will be completing a more detailed investigation this week.

Along with Doug Ashford and Denis Wastney, the group has organised for two information panels to be created with an informal unveiling to take place on the weekend of March 19

and 20. The weekend will also include a reunion of ex forestry workers, including a trip to Higgins Heritage Park where a display of the old woodsman school and village memorabilia will be on show, including photos dating back to 1954. After the unveiling on Saturday, March 19, both two metre by 800mm information panels will be available for everyone to view, visible from the WaiIti/St Arnaud Rd. Nelson airport’s best ever month Andrew Board

Nelson Airport has recorded its busiest month ever, with a whopping 22 per cent increase on passenger numbers from the same time last year. That saw 78,509 people either fly in or out of the airport during January and follows on from a record December the month before. But it wasn’t the only good news the airport announced this week, 2015 was also a record year with 778,384 passengers passing through the airport. It beat 2014 by more than 10,000 passengers.

Three new airlines to the region is the major reason for the huge jump in passenger numbers, but it is putting pressure on the airport’s infrastructure. Plans for a new airport terminal are progressing well for a 2018 opening, but Nelson Airport manager Rob Evans says they couldn’t wait that long for a car park upgrade due to the terminal’s heavy use. “The front of the terminal is really quite dangerous at the moment. There’s a lot of mixed traffic going on, with people trying to jostle around. There’s a high volume of people trying to cross the crossing to the

short term car parking and it’s actually becoming a real health and safety issue.” So the current short term parking will become more space for rental cars, where demand has dramatically jumped. The short term parking will move to a section of the current long term parking section. A dedicated zone for public drop offs – separate to where taxis and shuttles pick up – will be created. Rob says the other major factor for the change was the “outdated” ticket system. “It’s constantly breaking down and it’s become untenable for us. It already well past

its useful life, it’s a constant source of frustration and complaints by customers.” He says the new ticketing system is “top of the range” and will be recycled when the new terminal is built. The new terminal will be a complete rebuild and see the car parks jump from the current 650 to 1200. Rob says the huge increase in passengers this summer highlights the need for a new terminal. “Even before this summer, the new terminal was certainly on the radar and it is a project that certainly needs to be done. The growth we’ve had has accentuated that need.”

Fallen tree blocks peak hour traffic A fallen tree blocked one lane during peak hour traffic in Appleby last Wednesday. The tree fell during heavy wind in the middle of last week’s big storm. It timed its fall well enough to miss any traffic but did cause big delays while arboritsts worked to clean up the mess. The tree fell around 4.30pm on the Motueka side of the Appleby Bridge and caused kilometres of congestion as police controlled the flow of traffic. Richmond man Steve Page arrived at the scene shortly after the tree fell and says traffic could only just squeeze past the tree. “It was a very large and bushy tree. There were extremely strong winds in the area at the time and there was debris all over the road.” The storm caused some minor flooding and damage around the region. The Wairoa River also recorded a 25 year flood event, which caused surface flooding at the Brightwater bridge.

Grandma and granddaughter celebrate their 18th birthdays Not too many teenage girls celebrate the same birthday on the same day as their grandmother but that’s exactly what happened when Stoke’s Holly Young and her “nana” Jean Young blew out the candles on their 18th birthday cake on Sunday. That may sounds a bit like a game show riddle but there’s actually a perfectly good explanation with Jean being born on a leap day back in 1944. Although the East Taieri grandmother is actually turning 72, she will officially be celebrating her 18th birthday alongside Holly who turns a slightly younger version of 18 on February 22.

“We’ll both be 18 so we’ll be old enough to go have a drink in the pub to celebrate,” Jean joked. “The girls all think it’s a great laugh.” Holly says “it’s awesome” that she is sharing her 18th birthday with her grandmother and admits she has had a few strange looks when she tells her friends about it. “They look at me like I’m joking but then they usually work it out,” Holly says. It was the second time Jean has shared a birthday celebration with one of her granddaughters. Four years ago Jean turned 17 in the same year as Holly’s older sister Jess.

Jean, who has six grandchildren including five granddaughters, says she gave Holly a silver locket for her birthday. “I’ve always given them some money for their birthdays up until they turn 18 and then I get them a silver locket,” Jean says. “But after that, they are on their own - they are old enough to look after themselves.” Although Jean is turning 72, Holly’s mum Rebecca says her mother-in-law could easily pass for an 18-year-old. “She’s a real laugh and has so much energy she’s just like an 18-year-old. She is always busy and playing bowls - she’s amazing.”

Summer fair raising money for new horse The Richmond Riding for the Disabled are holding their annual Summer Fair this Saturday with all the proceeds going towards purchasing a new horse for their Champion Rd stables. Richmond RDA presently has 10 horses which are ridden by 65 clients aged from three to 70. But the charity’s staff and volunteers badly need “a big strong weight-bearing horse for their heavier clients” and that’s where the proceeds from Saturday’s fair will be going, the group’s administrator Jenny Stebbings says. Jenny says the fair is the group’s biggest fundraiser of the year and they hope to get good support from the

community. She says there will be something for everyone at the fair including pony rides, face painting, a bouncy castle and food, coffee, produce and baking stalls. There will also be a vaulting display, which is essentially gymnastics on horseback, a horse parade and an exhibition from Zefiro the Dancing Stallion. “We hope to make this the best fair we have had so far,” she says. “Rally your family, friends, neighbours so they come along and support us.” The fair will be held at the RDA’s grounds at 169 Champion Rd from 10am to 2pm on Saturday. Put an end to 'sunshine wages': As a small business owner, I applaud the Union, its members, the community supporters and the many employees who are also members, for standing up and fighting back against unfairness. The fact that New World Nelson and Pak n Save Richmond owners see no problem paying their workers $2 less than regional North Island workers and Countdown employees, doing the same job because we live in Nelson, affects my business. Lower wages = less discretionary income = less money in the local economy = bad news for small businesses. I wonder how the two owners would feel if I only wanted to pay 85- 90 per cent of my checkout bill? Because, hey, it's Nelson, I think we all know the answer. Drones giving new perspective on our city Camera drones have given photographers access to shots usually only attainable by those with enough money to hire a helicopter – and the results are spectacular. There are several commercial operators in Nelson, but one local man who has been taking some spectacular shots of our region says, for him, it started as a hobby. “In my work, Toby I operate Harvey. underwater vehicles by remote control, basically submarines under the sea,” says Toby Harvey. “So when I first heard of drones I thought I’d already have a head start.” Toby works at sea for long periods, but it also means he is home in Nelson for long periods. He says his first drone took a few hits but he now has the latest in 4k drone technology and is using it for good. He’s already captured a

Navy ship opens for the Nelsonians HMNZS Otago was swamped by the public on Saturday, as wave after wave stepped aboard to explore the Royal New Zealand Navy ship during its open day. This is the first time Otago has come to Nelson, the port visit being part of Operation Neptune, the navy’s 75th anniversary. The open day gave members of the public a chance to get up close and personal with the ship and the crew, and learn about the role of the navy, which included a weapons display and the chance to walk through areas such as the bridge and the galley.

The 87 metre ship has a core crew of 37, with an 80 person capacity, and is mainly involved in fisheries and customs patrols. Nelson’s Fletcher Slierendrecht is an Ensign aboard the ship, joining the navy as an officer in 2014. “I’ve seen some pretty cool stuff and done some pretty awesome stuff in ports. I’ve only been in for two years and I’ve been around most of Australia, been to quite a lot of places in New Zealand. I’ve done an exchange with the US navy, I spent time on their ships so I’ve been to South Korea and Japan,” says Fletcher.

His role as a bridge watch keeper can be likened to that of a back seat driver, overseeing the ships daily schedule, ensuring the ship maintains its path and understanding the plant. “I’ve loved every moment, you get opportunities you don’t get with anyone else,” says Fletcher. The following day a service for HMS Neptune was held at Wakefield Quay. The ship sank after hitting an enemy minefield in the Mediterranean on December 18, 1941, with the loss of all but one man, including all 150 New Zealanders on-board, including four Nelsonians.

They came, they saw, they thrilled. The Vodafone Warriors – led for the final time by their home-town skipper Simon Mannering – delighted a stellar 9200 crowd at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, despite the hosts suffering a decisive 46-10 loss against Sydney’s St George Illawarra Dragons. But it wasn’t about the score; the event itself was a huge success. The Dragons arrived in Nelson on Monday for the NRL pre-season game and spent the week interacting with local schools, charities and sports teams. The Warriors also spent time meeting locals, with visits to Richmond Mall, schools and a charity dinner at McCashin’s on Thursday night. The match was organised by the fledging Trafalgar Events, owned by Aldo Miccio

Both men gave the event an emphatic thumbs up. “It was an amazing day. The crowd loved it, the teams loved it. It was fantastic,” said Aldo after the match. In the crowd, people came from far and wide - Greymouth, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch. “It’s the greatest thing ever, I used to live in Auckland so we used to go to all the

games,” says Greg Williams of Nelson. Blenheim’s Tez Hardwick was enjoying the day. “We’re all Warriors fans, we’re not enjoying the score but we’re definitely enjoying the occasion.” Aldo says they are hoping to bring the Warriors back to Nelson, if not next year then the year after. “Now we need to sit down with both teams. But the players and management loved it and want to come back, but it’s just a matter of schedules.” Both he and Barry say watching the Mad Butcher, Sir Peter Leitch, land on the ground in a helicopter before kickoff was a highlight, as they surprised him by flying his grandson down from Auckland for the game. The other highlight, they say, was watching Simon Mannering lead the team onto Trafalgar Park. “There were so many highlights,” says Aldo. “But those were special.”

New vicarage project Good things take time, so the saying goes. After beginning the planning almost five years ago, it is great to be able to say the project is completed. With the aim of providing the community a local church and resident church Minister into the future, the Brightwater Community Anglican Church has been working on replacing the Church house (Vicarage) in Brightwater. This vicarage had served its function for over 112 years until it was no longer viable to maintain. The building was sold off site to be rejuvenated on a new site near Motueka. Six months ago the foundations for the new Vicarage were poured. Many people have watched with interest as the building has taken shape and it will be finished by the end of February. The new Vicarage is

the third on site after the first one, built in the 1850’s, burnt down and was replaced by the second in 1904. We trust this new Vicarage will serve the community as we look forward to the next 100 years. Thanks to all who have worked hard to bring this project to completion. In scripture we read “So, my dear Christian friends, companions in following this call to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He’s the centerpiece of everything we believe, faithful in everything God gave him to do. Moses was also faithful, but Jesus gets far more honour. A builder is more valuable than a building any day. Rugby 7’s Wanderers followed up their win of the Tasman 7’s held at Sports Park, Motueka with a trip to Woodend for the annual 7’s competition and also to the Middlesex Rugby 7’s Tournament hosted by the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club. This well organised competition was held over two days with 16 teams entered. Wanderers players thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the tournament and did well in this very high standard competition.
