Ant plan needs support Kate Russell

Two Nelson residents believe they may have come up with a cost-effective and long-term solution for controlling Argentine ants in the region, using bait made from just sugar, water and borax. But, they say it will only work if the whole community gets behind their idea. Dr Kay Sneddon and Andrew Goldsworthy have teamed up to develop the bait, which is based on a similar project carried out in California where Argentine ants are regarded as the number one pest. They say the key to the bait’s effectiveness is using a low concentration of borax, a household product, which is a natural salt and has a low level of toxicity. It is not poisonous to animals or hu-

mans in low concentrations as long as precautions are taken. “Borax has been used to combat ants for ages - it’s not new, but what is new is the concentration,” says Kay. “People used to use it in very high concentrations, but it would kill the working ants straight away so wouldn’t have a chance to bring the bait back to kill the queens, which is what we need to do. But this low dose bait will allow the worker ants to return to the nest with the bait and get it into the colonies.” Andrew says the reason Argentine ants have established themselves so strongly in Richmond and Nelson is because they have multiple queens and form ‘supercolonies.’ And it’s a problem which

BRIGHTWATER WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL: Nelson's Anna Thompson and Brightwater’s Marian Goodman enjoy a glass of the crowd-favourite Middle-Earth Rose at Sunday’s Brightwater Wine & Food Festival. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Huge crowd for wine and food festival Wine and music were flowing as over 4000 locals filed into Sunday’s Brightwater Wine & Food Festival, armed with umbrellas, picnic blankets and an endless sea of sunscreen. Middle-Earth Vineyard played host to the annual festival once more and was joined by the Mussel Inn, Waimea Estate, Millcrest Wines, Dale’s Brewing and other local vineyards, breweries and food stalls. Brightwater's Marian Goodman lives only a stone’s throw from the event. “This is our fourth year com-

ing, it’s such a cool community event and I only have to walk across the road.” Organiser Kevin Gear says Sunday’s festival was a dream. “It was a great day with no trouble, the weather was fantastic, the venue looked superb and everyone was just enjoying the music, food, wine and beer.” Kevin says the big winner was the camper vans, “We had around 50 turn up from all around New Zealand and they had a great time.”

For the first time, the festival opened its gates to motorhomes, offering a free stay amongst the vineyards. Noel and Barb Bain, who travelled up from Oamaru with Raewyn and Terry Thorpe, made the most of the festival’s new addition. “It was a good stay last night, everyone had a good time and it was very sociable,” says Terry. The group had never been to the festival before but said they were having a great time and recommended the Middle-Earth wines.

Nelsonians risk “turning a blind eye to.” They both say the ants are very concentrated in parts of Nelson, especially The Wood and Panorama Drive, but are widely found in the region and can be spread in potting mix. Some believe that they could even get into the beech forests, where they could potentially cause an even greater risk. “I think we’ve only just woken up to the fact that they’ve landed,” Andrew says. “As the Council's handout warns us, they have the potential to eradicate every other type of ant, earthworms, invertebrates and nestlings. They could get into orchards and vineyards, and if they’re hungry enough, they’ve even been known to damage the irrigation.” Andrew says the first step is to get

strategically as possible around the infested areas.” They are hoping to organise an ‘ant month’ in the springtime when they will hold ‘mixing parties’ to get whole streets on board and encour-

age the community to put bait jars down simultaneously. “It only takes one or two households to resist and you don’t get rid of the infestation, it just stays there and will spread out again. The ants can advance 160 metres a year.” Andrew says they are currently trialling versions of the bait locally, and they hope to hold a meeting in Tahunanui soon to see if there is support for a strategy to tackle the problem in a new and more effective way. “You have to think of it as a war, not a battle,” says Andrew. “The ants only landed here in 2001 and have been on the march since, but we have the opportunity to try to knock them back. In 10 years time we won’t have the opportunity to do anything - now we still have hope.” If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Judy at Tahunanui Community Centre on 548 6036.

Heavy rain destroys part of Brook fence Kate Russell A slip triggered by heavy rain in Nelson last week has caused significant damage to the Brook Sanctuary’s pest-proof fence. A significant 65 metres of the fence line, which was only completed six months ago, will need to be repaired, after a slip came down Fringed Hill above the pest proof fence track and the Dun Mountain Trail. Brook Waimarama Sanctuary general manager Hudson Dodd says the entire perimeter of the fence was checked on Friday and they are now having the damage and repairs to the fence assessed. “Once this process has been completed we will know what the programme of remedial works will look like,” he says. “Of course, we want the repairs to be done as soon as possible, but we won’t have a time-frame for this until the assessment is finished, which may take some time due to the complexity of the situation.” Well-known Nelson mountainbiking advocate Bryce Buckland says it’s “not surprising” that the fence has been

He has been against the building of the pest-proof fence right from the start, and voiced his concerns after a 22 metre section of the Dun Mountain Trail slipped onto the fence line cut following heavy rain last March. “Why they put the fence in before clearing the remainder of the slip above it that was triggered by their fence cut is beyond me,” says Bryce. “Now they are probably going to have to cut into the hillside again to fix the fence which will trigger another slip. “When we get a significant rain and wind storm event, then we will see real carnage up there.

They are fiddling with nature and they, and ratepayers, will pay the penalty.” But Hudson says both the Trust and Nelson City Council were aware of the risk of slips on Fringed Hill. “All prudent steps have been taken to minimise and mitigate that risk,” he says. “The great community benefits of the project outweigh the risk of slips to the pest-proof fence. While it’s disappointing to see it damaged, contractors are working on an assessment for repairs.” Nelson City Council’s communication manager Paul Shattock says that engineers will be completing a more detailed investigation this week.

Golden Downs’ place in the region’s forestry industry is as big as the 33,000 hectares it covers, and now a group of former forestry workers want to make sure that history is accessible to more people. In 1927, a large exotic forest planting programme was put in place at Golden Downs Forest. Two decades later, in 1946, construction of a new village began at Valley Road and in 1951 the woodsman training John Ward, left, and Dennis Wastney, two of the people behind the crea- school opened its doors. tion of the information panels, holding a picture of the original Golden The group of ex forestry workers say the history of the past Downs village. When John and fellow forest ranger Don Cooper retired in the early 1990s, they both decided to write a history of the forest, published in 1997, and then around five years ago the suggestion was made to John to create an information board on the original village site. “The reason we didn't proceed with it was we were worried about vandalism, so we shelved it. However, Reid Mallinson, an ex-woodsman from Murchison, was very keen to get things going so he got us focused and we decided to go ahead and do it,” says John. Along with Doug Ashford and Denis Wastney, the group has organised for two information panels to be created with an informal unveiling to take place on the weekend of March 19

and 20. The weekend will also include a reunion of ex forestry workers, including a trip to Higgins Heritage Park where a display of the old woodsman school and village memorabilia will be on show, including photos dating back to 1954. After the unveiling on Saturday, March 19, both two metre by 800mm information panels will be available for everyone to view, visible from the WaiIti/St Arnaud Rd. The group wishes to thank Signs and Graphics for the work they've done putting the panels together and the Cameron family on whose land the panels will be erected, along with Willie Cameron for his help and expertise. Anyone wishing to attend the informal unveiling can contact Denis Wastney on 545 7299.

Nelson airport’s best ever month Andrew Board

Nelson Airport has recorded its busiest month ever, with a whopping 22 per cent increase on passenger numbers from the same time last year. That saw 78,509 people either fly in or out of the airport during January and follows on from a record December the month before. But it wasn’t the only good news the airport announced this week, 2015 was also a record year with 778,384 passengers passing through the airport. It beat 2014 by more than 10,000 passengers.

Three new airlines to the region is the major reason for the huge jump in passenger numbers, but it is putting pressure on the airport’s infrastructure. Plans for a new airport terminal are progressing well for a 2018 opening, but Nelson Airport manager Rob Evans says they couldn’t wait that long for a car park upgrade due to the terminal’s heavy use. “The front of the terminal is really quite dangerous at the moment. There’s a lot of mixed traffic going on, with people trying to jostle around. There’s a high volume of people trying to cross the crossing to the

short term car parking and it’s actually becoming a real health and safety issue.” So the current short term parking will become more space for rental cars, where demand has dramatically jumped. The short term parking will move to a section of the current long term parking section. A dedicated zone for public drop offs – separate to where taxis and shuttles pick up – will be created. Rob says the other major factor for the change was the “outdated” ticket system. “It’s constantly breaking down and it’s become untenable for us. It already well past

its useful life, it’s a constant source of frustration and complaints by customers.” He says the new ticketing system is “top of the range” and will be recycled when the new terminal is built. The new terminal will be a complete rebuild and see the car parks jump from the current 650 to 1200. Rob says the huge increase in passengers this summer highlights the need for a new terminal. “Even before this summer, the new terminal was certainly on the radar and it is a project that certainly needs to be done. The growth we’ve had has accentuated that need.”

Fallen tree blocks peak hour traffic A fallen tree blocked one lane during peak hour traffic in Appleby last Wednesday. The tree fell during heavy wind in the middle of last week’s big storm. It timed its fall well enough to miss any traffic but did cause big delays while arboritsts worked to clean up the mess. The tree fell around 4.30pm on the Motueka side of the Appleby Bridge and caused kilometres of congestion as police controlled the flow of traffic. Richmond man Steve Page arrived at the scene shortly after the tree fell and says traffic could only just squeeze past the tree. “It was a very large and bushy tree. There were extremely strong winds in the area at the time and there was debris all over the road.” The storm caused some minor flooding and damage around the region. The Wairoa River also recorded a 25 year flood event, which caused surface flooding at the Brightwater bridge.

Grandma and granddaughter celebrate their 18th birthdays Not too many teenage girls celebrate the same birthday on the same day as their grandmother but that’s exactly what happened when Stoke’s Holly Young and her “nana” Jean Young blew out the candles on their 18th birthday cake on Sunday. That may sounds a bit like a game show riddle but there’s actually a perfectly good explanation with Jean being born on a leap day back in 1944. Although the East Taieri grandmother is actually turning 72, she will officially be celebrating her 18th birthday alongside Holly who turns a slightly younger version of 18 on February 22.

“We’ll both be 18 so we’ll be old enough to go have a drink in the pub to celebrate,” Jean joked. “The girls all think it’s a great laugh.” Holly says “it’s awesome” that she is sharing her 18th birthday with her grandmother and admits she has had a few strange looks when she tells her friends about it. “They look at me like I’m joking but then they usually work it out,” Holly says. It was the second time Jean has shared a birthday celebration with one of her granddaughters. Four years ago Jean turned 17 in the same year as Holly’s older sister Jess.

Jean, who has six grandchildren including five granddaughters, says she gave Holly a silver locket for her birthday. “I’ve always given them some money for their birthdays up until they turn 18 and then I get them a silver locket,” Jean says. “But after that, they are on their own - they are old enough to look after themselves.” Although Jean is turning 72, Holly’s mum Rebecca says her mother-in-law could easily pass for an 18-year-old. “She’s a real laugh and has so much energy she’s just like an 18-year-old. She is always busy and playing bowls - she’s amazing.”

Summer fair raising money for new horse The Richmond Riding for the Disabled are holding their annual Summer Fair this Saturday with all the proceeds going towards purchasing a new horse for their Champion Rd stables. Richmond RDA presently has 10 horses which are ridden by 65 clients aged from three to 70. But the charity’s staff and volunteers badly need “a big strong weight-bearing horse for their heavier clients” and that’s where the proceeds from Saturday’s fair will be going, the group’s administrator Jenny Stebbings says. Jenny says the fair is the group’s biggest fundraiser of the year and they hope to get good support from the

community. She says there will be something for everyone at the fair including pony rides, face painting, a bouncy castle and food, coffee, produce and baking stalls. There will also be a vaulting display, which is essentially gymnastics on horseback, a horse parade and an exhibition from Zefiro the Dancing Stallion. “We hope to make this the best fair we have had so far,” she says. “Rally your family, friends, neighbours so they come along and support us.” The fair will be held at the RDA’s grounds at 169 Champion Rd from 10am to 2pm on Saturday. Family Praise in the Park to be held at Washbourn Praise in the Park is back, the community event crammed with live music, picnics, cricket, face and fingernail painting, spot prizes, ultimate frisbee and a bouncy castle is set to take over Washbourn Gardens once more. The free event will be hosted by Richmond Community Church from 5 pm - 7.30 pm this Sunday, February 28. Organiser Abigail Packer says this is the third of four Praise in the Park events the region’s churches are hosting this summer. “It’s a great opportunity for families to get together and it’s the highlight of our month,” says Abigail. “The music groups and everyone involved are all brimming with enthusiasm, the last event was bigger than the first and we have even more participation in this one, so we’re all very excited and expecting a big crowd.” Abigail says this Praise in the Park will have several spot Two-year-old Baiprizes but the main ley Packer with his prize, a family porface painted at the trait package will be January Praise in the given away in a free Park. Appalling. The two “out of town” protestors were union organisers, which the police had no right to interfere with their access to the workplace of union members. James (via nelsonlive.co.nz).

As a neighbour trying to send help in right direction it was a little frustrating especially as it was getting dark. This happens all too often. We have been asked numerous times to pull vehicles out. Please stay away when there is flooding. If it was high tide the story could have been tragic. The river rises up to 500mm on a high tide without allowing for flooding. Robyn Russ.

People just need to keep off what isn't theirs. That is what's ruining the fun for everybody else. Andrea Grocott. Queen St upgrade: If you are going to do that, then what happens to all the traffic now and all the lost car parking. There needs to be a major rethink on the roads around Richmond, as they are not working now, so don’t just go and do this and stuff it up even further and then say ‘oh bugger didn’t think of that!’ Mike Roberts. Agree Robyn. I live in Appleby too and it is astounding the number of times people and vehicles have been rescued in floodwaters down there. It rises damned fast like you said. Janelle Thorpe. And that’s what caught them out, it rose in a hell of a hurry and starting coming over the stopbank right where they were. That, and mechanical failure on the vehicle. Was still a dumb move, don’t get me wrong but there are a lot of incorrect things being given as fact on the news etc. Lucas J Benfell. Yeah, it is pretty stupid, but these things happen so quickly - and you can guarantee they won’t put their child in that situation again. Imagine how terrified that mother must have been when she realised the trouble they were in. Sophie Hodge. Goes to show just how much some people value their and someone else’s lives. Put an end to 'sunshine wages': As a small business owner, I applaud the Union, its members, the community supporters and the many employees who are also members, for standing up and fighting back against unfairness. The fact that New World Nelson and Pak n Save Richmond owners see no problem paying their workers $2 less than regional North Island workers and Countdown employees, doing the same job because we live in Nelson, affects my business. Lower wages = less discretionary income = less money in the local economy = bad news for small businesses. I wonder how the two owners would feel if I only wanted to pay 85- 90 per cent of my checkout bill? Because, hey, it's Nelson, I think we all know the answer. Let's end sunshine wages once and for all, it is not cheaper to live in Nelson, in fact it is consistently in the top five or so most expensive places to buy a house and raise a family. It's time for a Fair Go for Foodstuffs workers and all Nelson workers. Andrew Irvine, Stoke.

Drones giving new perspective on our city Camera drones have given photographers access to shots usually only attainable by those with enough money to hire a helicopter – and the results are spectacular. Carpark improvements underway at Nelson Airport. Works on site from the 15th February to the early March. To avoid delays please arrive early. Navy ship opens for the Nelsonians HMNZS Otago was swamped by the public on Saturday, as wave after wave stepped aboard to explore the Royal New Zealand Navy ship during its open day. This is the first time Otago has come to Nelson, the port visit being part of Operation Neptune, the navy’s 75th anniversary. The open day gave members of the public a chance to get up close and personal with the ship and the crew, and learn about the role of the navy, which included a weapons display and the chance to walk through areas such as the bridge and the galley.

The 87 metre ship has a core crew of 37, with an 80 person capacity, and is mainly involved in fisheries and customs patrols. Nelson’s Fletcher Slierendrecht is an Ensign aboard the ship, joining the navy as an officer in 2014. “I’ve seen some pretty cool stuff and done some pretty awesome stuff in ports. I’ve only been in for two years and I’ve been around most of Australia, been to quite a lot of places in New Zealand. I’ve done an exchange with the US navy, I spent time on their ships so I’ve been to South Korea and Japan,” says Fletcher.

His role as a bridge watch keeper can be likened to that of a back seat driver, overseeing the ships daily schedule, ensuring the ship maintains its path and understanding the plant. “I’ve loved every moment, you get opportunities you don’t get with anyone else,” says Fletcher. The following day a service for HMS Neptune was held at Wakefield Quay. The ship sank after hitting an enemy minefield in the Mediterranean on December 18, 1941, with the loss of all but one man, including all 150 New Zealanders on-board, including four Nelsonians.

They came, they saw, they thrilled. The Vodafone Warriors – led for the final time by their home-town skipper Simon Mannering – delighted a stellar 9200 crowd at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, despite the hosts suffering a decisive 46-10 loss against Sydney’s St George Illawarra Dragons. But it wasn’t about the score; the event itself was a huge success. The Dragons arrived in Nelson on Monday for the NRL pre-season game and spent the week interacting with local schools, charities and sports teams. The Warriors also spent time meeting locals, with visits to Richmond Mall, schools and a charity dinner at McCashin’s on Thursday night. The match was organised by the fledging Trafalgar Events, owned by Aldo Miccio

Both men gave the event an emphatic thumbs up. “It was an amazing day. The crowd loved it, the teams loved it. It was fantastic,” said Aldo after the match. In the crowd, people came from far and wide - Greymouth, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch. “It’s the greatest thing ever, I used to live in Auckland so we used to go to all the

games,” says Greg Williams of Nelson. Blenheim’s Tez Hardwick was enjoying the day. “We’re all Warriors fans, we’re not enjoying the score but we’re definitely enjoying the occasion.” Aldo says they are hoping to bring the Warriors back to Nelson, if not next year then the year after. “Now we need to sit down with both teams. But the players and management loved it and want to come back, but it’s just a matter of schedules.” Both he and Barry say watching the Mad Butcher, Sir Peter Leitch, land on the ground in a helicopter before kickoff was a highlight, as they surprised him by flying his grandson down from Auckland for the game. The other highlight, they say, was watching Simon Mannering lead the team onto Trafalgar Park. “There were so many highlights,” says Aldo. “But those were special.”

Hi Everyone, We hope you all had a good break and are ready to enjoy 2016. The weather has been hot over the summer, so the recent rain was very welcome, although our rivers were running really high and it did result in some surface flooding, particularly out at Burke’s Bank. Next month the Tasman District Council will start outlining their 2017 annual plan, first of all here in Brightwater. The residents of Brightwater are all invited to

Finals for the one dayers will be played at Saxtons Oval (depending on

New vicarage project Good things take time, so the saying goes. After beginning the planning almost five years ago, it is great to be able to say the project is completed. With the aim of providing the community a local church and resident church Minister into the future, the Brightwater Community Anglican Church has been working on replacing the Church house (Vicarage) in Brightwater. This vicarage had served its function for over 112 years until it was no longer viable to maintain. The building was sold off site to be rejuvenated on a new site near Motueka. Six months ago the foundations for the new Vicarage were poured. Many people have watched with interest as the building has taken shape and it will be finished by the end of February. The new Vicarage is

the third on site after the first one, built in the 1850’s, burnt down and was replaced by the second in 1904. We trust this new Vicarage will serve the community as we look forward to the next 100 years. Thanks to all who have worked hard to bring this project to completion. In scripture we read “So, my dear Christian friends, companions in following this call to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He’s the centerpiece of everything we believe, faithful in everything God gave him to do. Moses was also faithful, but Jesus gets far more honour. A builder is more valuable than a building any day. Every house has a builder, but the Builder behind them all is God.” (Hebrews 3:1-4). Rev Martin Harrison, Brightwater Community Anglican Church

Rugby 7’s Wanderers followed up their win of the Tasman 7’s held at Sports Park, Motueka with a trip to Woodend for the annual 7’s competition and also to the Middlesex Rugby 7’s Tournament hosted by the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club. This well organised competition was held over two days with 16 teams entered. Wanderers players thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the tournament and did well in this very high standard competition.

Nelson Bays Football coordinates the sport in the region and developing youth, along with attracting new players, is a big part of their job. As a result, Nelson Bays Football will be kicking off the season with a women’s and girls day, to be held at Saxton Field on Saturday, February 27. The day is all about promoting the game to those who are interested in joining the sport, or for those who already play and would like a pre-season warm-up in a relaxed, fun environment. The

The Tasman United women’s football team was also granted entry into the Mainland Women’s Premier League late last year, a league of eight that features the top club teams from Christchurch. This is the first time ever the region has had a team competing at this level, offering the best female players in Nelson and Marlborough the opportunity to play in winter at the highest level. So you’ve now completed the pathway as far as you can go and given those young players the chance to go right down this route in football and they don’t have to leave their region to do it.”

Football is the biggest participation sport in the region, with thousands of players from the age of four to a select few still playing in their 60s, enjoying the game from April through to the end of the season in September. Locally, football starts at the age of four with the First Kicks programme, followed by Fun Football for ages 7-8, then it moves in to junior and youth leagues. At senior level there is a women’s second division played on Sundays, accommodating multi-sport players, a women’s first division that plays on Saturdays and four men’s divisions which also take place on Saturdays. Local clubs playing include FC Nelson, Nelson Suburbs, Richmond Athletic, Tahunanui FC, Wakefield, Waimea Plains, Mapua, Upper Moutere, Motueka and Golden Bay, as well as Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Waimea College, Garin College and Nayland College. Nelson Bays Football have just one more key message they’d like to get across before the start of the season, join in and enjoy the fantastic game of football.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club 2016

With a successful touch season completed, Waimea Old Boys are now focused on winter rugby and will be looking to make this season a winning one for the club. Last year, the senior teams performed well with the Super Liquor Richmond division two team taking out the final against Wanderers, while the Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys were knocked out of the Car Company Nelson Bays Division One Championship during the semi-finals and just fell short of the Tasman Trophy in the final against Wanderers.

While benefiting from a number of imported players last season, Waimea Old Boys Club president Duane Whiting says they always want as many local players as possible. That’s why the club is working extremely hard to develop the talent of the younger members, ensuring there are good numbers to make up the senior teams in the future. Their development program is focused on picking up players coming through the college’s and includes access to the club’s gym where a trainer is on hand to help them set up the right training

Chris will be taking an active role, not just with the upand-coming senior players, but helping support coaches and players throughout the JAB grades too. Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club 2016

This year, Duane says Waimea Old Boys will put an even stronger spotlight on having fun and enjoying the great game of rugby. “Everyone wants to be competitive but there’s a big focus on having fun and having the JAB involved with the senior side of the club as well.” The ‘Waimea Old Boys family’ is an important part of what makes them a strong club and Duane says its all about getting the various parties on board to ensure their future as a great local rugby club. The under 19 team will also be returning to play out of Waimea Old Boys for their third years after a successful season in 2015. The team is the perfect

opportunity for players who have left school but aren’t keen on joining the senior club teams, or their school team which they might still be eligible for. The under 14s have also come under the management of Waimea Old Boys in a bid to keep the age group involved with rugby, and while they have the basis of a team together, it’s a case of “the more the merrier,” says Duane. It’s not just the seniors boasting success. Waimea Old Boys is proud to have some of the largest JAB numbers in the region with over 200 kids playing across 19 teams last year. JAB chairman Jeremy Salton is looking forward to another great year with the club’s promising stars and says

the club isn’t just about playing rugby, but creating a real community spirit amongst teams and the club as a whole. The grades range from under-5, through to the end of intermediate, and of course the under 14 team which includes players in year 9 of college. “We’re a very community based club and at the end of the year when representative rugby comes into it, we

definitely have our fair share of representation throughout those grades,” says Jeremy. A JAB registration and information evening will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 2 and 3, and Jeremy welcomes families to come along and have a look at joining the Waimea Old Boys family. The night will run from 6pm until 7:30pm at the clubrooms at Jubilee Park.

Lake rotoiti powerboat regatta 27 & 28 FebRuaRy 2016

Thunder on the water The tranquil waters of Lake Rotoiti will be taken over by the noise of power boats as the annual Rotoiti Power Boat club regatta rolls into town this weekend. The annual regatta runs for two days, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February. The event is the third of four major national meetings this year. The first two were in the North Island and the fourth is at Lake Kaniere over Easter weekend.

Club spokesman Joe Blakiston says the Lake Rotoiti event is a highlight for drivers. “This event is really quite special. To race in a national park is pretty magical from a driver’s point of view.” Racing will include a number of classes, including the Grand Prix Hydroplanes capable of doing over 250 kilometres per hour, Formula 1 boats racing around a tight circuit and a full range of power boating events starting at the Junior and Clubman boats. Joe says the event is a great

There are great views from anywhere on the foreshore and you’re guaranteed to see great, close racing because you’re so close to the action.” On the water, Nelson’s Julian Stilwell is one to watch for. second national title on his home water. Stilwell only leads Palmerston North’s Derek McAdam by 7 points, and with 20 points for each race win, will need to finish strong. But there are plenty of other local drivers that will be out on the water, including 13 year old Lee Merrion and 15 year old James Blakiston who will both be racing for the South Island Junior Championship. Richmond’s Patrick Morris will also take over the reins from

father Andy Morris to compete for the South Island Clubman Championship. The Grand Prix Hydroplanes, including Peter Knight Snr’s “The Boss” will contest the South Island GP Championship and the much sort after A.E. Baker Trophy, and have shown some very close racing so far this season. Racing gets underway each day at Lake Rotoiti from 11am and a full programme of racing is planned.

Nelson rowers win gold Nelson rowers brought home a swag of gold from the national rowing championship at Lake Karapiro over the weekend. Olly Stephens was a big winner, taking home two gold medals, a silver and securing a national trial on the back of his performance. Olly won the under-20 men’s single race, teamed up with Wade Puklowski to win silver in the senior double and was a part of the winning Nelson/ Marlborough men’s eight. Nelson Rowing Club coach

Tim Babbage says Olly’s performance wasn’t a surprise to him but it may have been to others. “He was the only guy who medalled in that race who wasn’t in a high performance centre team.” The mens 8 team also featured Wade, Ryan Flintoff and Jack Castle from Nelson and four Marlborough rowers. The Nelson club’s third gold came from the women’s under 19 four, featuring Gabby Hannen, Meg Stephens, Sasha Cullum, Eilish Byrne and cox Evie

Strawbridge. Two other Nelson rowers also won gold but were competing out of the New Zealand High Performance centre. Zoe McBride won the lightweight single sculls and Sean Ducray was in the winning under-20 double. Tim says he was happy with the overall performance. “They performed well and it was pretty good overall. I was hoping for another gold to be fair, but that water on Friday made it a bit of a lottery, unfortunately.”

When you set foot inside Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home, you’re stepping into the care of Val and Laurie Anisy, the funeral directors who can make any farewell special and meaningful. With new premises on Richmond’s McGlashen Ave, Val and Laurie say their change of location offers a warmer, brighter, more welcoming atmosphere and better meets the needs of families who have lost a loved one. With easy access for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, an open, homely reception and three viewing rooms, Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home is proud to offer personlised care, modern service and traditional dignity, right in the centre of Richmond. When it comes to organising the funeral of a loved one, there are no limits to the way a fam-

ily can say goodbye and now Laurie and Val are proud to provide people with a location that is capable of giving the same level of care and support as they themselves offer families. Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home can do as little or as much as a family would like in the preparation for a funeral and being a small, local team in a New Zealand owned business, Val and Laurie value the relationships that are created, always welcoming past clients in for a coffee and a chat in their cosy reception area. Don’t hesitate to contact Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home on 544 1129, or come and visit them in their new premises next to Bowater Toyota and Opritech at 14 McGlashen Ave. Laurie and Val consider it an honour to assist families in their time of grief and guide them through the funeral process. Wakefield rider close to Paralympics Jessie Johnston Frances Dick is well on her way to the Rio Paralympics after recently achieving her international qualifications. The Wakefield dressage rider has so far competed in two out of three major competitions in order to achieve the necessary percentages to qualify both internationally and nationally. In January, she attended the Boneo Classic in Australia, where she achieved her confidence of capability percentage and ticked off a requirement to compete in a three star or above event. This month, Frances competed in the Bates New Zealand Dressage Championship in Feilding where she achieved some of her best results. Frances and her horse, Weltmeister AF, known as Weltie, placed first in all three classes, receiving just point three off 72 per cent in their teams test and getting their highest score to date of 74.75 per cent in their freestyle test. Frances and Weltie are now looking to Farmlands Horse of the Year in Hastings for their last two percentages which will see them become eligible for national selection into the New Zealand team. The two remaining percentages must be in the team and championship sections and be between 72 and 75 per cent. Both the team and championship tests require horse and rider to perform a number of compulsory movements

Frances and Weltie have been working together now for three years and Frances says one thing she loves about working with him is the relationship they’ve formed. “For me, (I love it) when I feel that we’re so in sync or in tune, you just ask him to do anything and he’d go ‘how far?’ I like to strive towards something and to do that alongside a live animal, compared to say cycling or something mechanical, they’ve got to really trust you

and you’ve got to trust them.” Coming this close to the Rio Paralympics is also down to the support Frances has received from friends, family and sponsors, including her manager, Yvette Dick, instructor Rachel Thomas, groom and photographer Jessica Ladley, Prydes EasiFeed, Nelson Dressage Group, The Vet Centre Richmond and Andrew Conway, Wakefield Quarry, PGG Wrightsons Richmond and the Sports Nelson Tasman Trust. To view Frances and Weltie’s progress in their goal of reaching the Rio Paralympics, check out their Facebook page ‘The Road to Rio with Frances Dick’.

Local athletes conquer gruelling Wanaka triathlon Nelson triathletes had a big day out at Challenge Wanaka and the Lake Wanaka Half on Saturday battling big distances and strong winds in the popular long distance triathlons. It was already going to be a tough day completing either the 112.9km half or 225.8km full Iron-distance race around Lake Wanaka but the wind increased the suffering for all of the 1640 athletes. Eileen’s run was especially impressive completing the half marathon in a fast 1hr 42min Grant Blanchett - 00/00 47sec to be the 12th female overall. The ageless Peter Gibbs finishing second in his M65-70 age group Ben Brownie - 00/00 while Neil Green also had a strong race finishing fifth in the competitive M40-45 age group Gerard Clark - 00/00 and 45th overall in 5hr 12min 35sec. Olivia Bird was third in the F25-29 age group and 31st overall Ben Coman - 00/00 in 5hr 4min 4sec. Former top cyclist Karyn Holland also performed well in her first full Iron-distance race, overcoming a Vanessa Gundry - 00/00 nervous start in the 3.8km swim Paula’s before completing the 180km cycle Preschool and 42.6km run to secure third Paul Mackay - 00/00 place in her F50-59 age group in a time of 13hr 30min 15sec.

“I’m not a strong swimmer and when I saw how rough the lake was in the morning I was really worried,” Karyn says. “It was so bad I was standing on the shore before the start of the swim in tears – I was that scared.” But Karyn showed plenty of courage to battle her way around the two-lap course before showing speed on the bike and determination on the run. Although Karyn has completed a number of ultra-distance cycle races, she considered the 180km ride around Lake Wanaka was one of the hardest she has ever completed. “The wind was terrible. It was so strong coming back from Tarras I was in my smallest gear and only going 10 or 11 kilometres an hour,” she says. Another Nelson competitor, Simon Bloomberg, also completed the full distance race in 11hr 27min 31sec to finish third in the M50-59 age group after a strong swim and bike and steady run. Illness and mechanicals forced the withdrawal of Caro Gates, Jude Vincent and Kim Wadell from the full-distance event. Other Nelson results for the Lake Wanaka Half were: Paul Thornton 5hr 39min 54sec, M55-59, 5; Chris Vincent 5hr 41min 35sec M50-54, 11; Grant Ward 5hr 45min 1sec M40-44, 13; Frances Riley 5hr 54min 39sec F25-29, 10; Simon Kneebone 5hr 57min 43sec, M4549, 20; Mandy Medcalf-Stephens 6hr 51min 9sec F45-49, 11; Rob Cant 8hr 48min 39sec M50-54, 31; Alan and Vicki Bryson 5hr 32min 29sec in the team’s section.

Anthea Goodman I attended the Jesus Heals meetings at Aspire church in Nelson on thurs, fri, and sat night last weekend. On the second night, they were praying for people with problems related to the organs of the five senses, I went up for prayer for my nose that was broken when I was 14 years old playing volleyball at high school, I have always found it difficult to breath out of my nose with my mouth shut, as the prayer was spoken I noticed an ease with my breathing and now have no problem breathing through my nose with my mouth shut. Also I said to one of my children that God was going to heal my knees I couldn’t kneel down comfortable as there

HEALINGS FROM LAST YEAR Emma Marie

was pain behind my right knee, also I had damaged the ligaments just above my knees doing heavy lifting work building a mud brick house, this caused inflamation and the doctor said you couldn’t do anything about it, the result of this is that any walking downhill is painfull, well as this lady was finishing her prayer for my breathing, my knees dipped twice and I thought I wonder if my knees have been healed, when I went back to my seat I knelt down and there was no pain behind my right knee, the next day I went for a steep walk up the Richmond hills and when I came down I didn’t notice any pain. Thank Jesus you are our healer and our saviour.

Annette Thompson On the first night of the Jesus heals meetings I went forward for healing. I have been experiencing severe chest pains when exerting myself. I am a builder and pushing a wheelbarrow full of concrete would trigger this pain. It was quite serious, chest grabbing pain and would linger for hours after the physical workout.

Today I had a chance to test out the healing I received at the Healing Meeting. I wheelbarrowed concrete for several hours this afternoon. I even ran back pushing the barrow to the truck each time it needed to be replenished. I experienced NO PAIN! All glory to Jesus! “ they will lay hands on the sick and they shall recover”!

Pat Campbell I have a history of heart attacks and cardiac arrests. The Lord has shepherded me through them all and I have enjoyed a very good recovery. However in cold conditions and during exertion I usually got some chest pain through angina. This limited my walks on cold days to less than a kilometre if a slope was involved. I had prayer

for a heart condition on Thursday night and on Friday morning I walked about three times my usual distance in frosty conditions and up steep hills. I got puffed but had no chest pain. I repeated the exercise on Saturday and Sunday without problems. Praise the Lord! Murray Clarkson (77)

My girl (10yrs) because of the genetic condition she has, had been suffering excruciating pain in her knees. Doctors said she would need at least 3 surgeries on her knees between now and 15yrs old. Every night she would wake at least 3 times screaming in pain. Well last night she never woke once! I asked her this morning “are your knees mamae(sore) and she says “nope”. Our God is so awesome! Our saviour,

our provider, our healer! Ah needless to say, because we all had a great nights sleep none of us woke up until 8.20am oops! Bit late to school. UPDATE!! Another night of unbroken sleep and my girl has been jumping and running all yesterday and today! She has been full-on running on the side lines at rugby and jumping on the trampoline today for over an hour! My God My God My God your love for us never ceases!

Shelley Doherty On Friday at work I had one of the worse Asthma attacks I have had as an adult. Last night when I walked into the Jesus Heals meeting I still couldn’t breathe properly, could barely talk, and was wheezing. One thing you can’t do in that state is sing - except God. During worship my symptoms started to leave

and I was praying God give me new lungs - restore me, please don’t just fix me up, heal me. After Elder Netsy prayed for me every symptom left. I walked out healed. Better yet my unsaved husband couldn’t believe what had happened - I walked out a mess and came home new!

Ellena Feasey Healing testimony: For the past 5 and a half months I’ve suffered from Endometriosis. This is a chronic disease which caused great discomfort in my stomach as well as shooting pain in my legs, back and consistent cramps. I had to sleep with a wheat bag (or three) to ease the pain, Codeine, Panadol and Naproxen were my best friends. Well not any more! I went to the Thursday night meeting and in the 2nd worship song all the pain in my legs left me. Then Lorraine talked about visualising the healn take place. So I saw this mantle of liquid gold being

poured out all of my body. I saw it enter my mouth and when it reached the stomach, I saw the Endo literally dissolve! Went up for prayer afterwards too. After the meeting I tested the healing; any amount of sugar would flare up my stomach and cause severe pain, so I went to Maccas to grab a thickshake which was something I couldn’t drink beforehand. Not only could i drink the whole thing but there was NO PAIN! When I got home the Lord ministered to my back and woke up the next morning PAIN FREE! I haven’t taken a pill since! Praise God
